Summer Evenings on the Water: Fishing, Boating & Sunsets on New Bern's Rivers

There is something magical about summertime in Eastern North Carolina, especially when it involves an evening on the water. One of our favorite ways to spend a summer afternoon is launching the boat in New Bern and exploring the beautiful Neuse and Trent Rivers. Hunting for the best fishing spots becomes a fun adventure as summer starts to transition into fall. Do we know where the fish are? No. Do we still try to find them? yes. :)

With fishing rods and a cooler packed, we set out in search of one of the area's most popular catches—drum fish. We watched tons of jumping mullet bounce around on top of the river and thought we found the spot. We got a few bites but didn't hook anything. Even when the fish aren't biting nonstop, there's something relaxing about casting a line while surrounded by peaceful water, gentle breezes, and the sounds of nature.

After spending some time fishing, we put the rods away and simply enjoyed cruising the rivers. The Neuse and Trent offer incredible views of waterfront homes, and quiet creeks. Whether you're an experienced boater or just looking for a relaxing evening escape, these waterways showcase some of the best scenery our area has to offer.

As the day came to an end, we slowed the boat and watched the sun begin to dip below the horizon. The sky transformed into shades of orange, pink, and gold, reflecting across the calm water in a way that only a coastal North Carolina sunset can. It's one of those simple moments that reminds you why so many people love calling New Bern home. No matter how long you live here and cruise the rivers, you still never miss the opportunity to capture a photo on your way back into the dock. 

Life on the Neuse and Trent Rivers isn't just about boating or fishing—it's about making memories with family and friends, enjoying the outdoors, and appreciating everything this beautiful community has to offer.
